From August 18 - 20, Riga Technical University (RTU) will host the first 'Startup Slalom' + 'Startup Wise Guys' hackathon organized by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) in cooperation with Latvian Startup Association 'Startin.lv' and the largest "business-to-business" (B2B) European accelerator programme 'Startup Wise Guys'. The theme of the hackathon will be B2B software as a service (SaaS).
The hackathon or technology marathon is a 48-hour event. The aim of the hackathon is to create new teams and new technological solutions. Initially, every participant with a business idea presents it to other participants. Afterwards, the participants choose one of the ideas to develop within the next two days. This time, the theme of the hackathon is B2B software as service or SaaS.
The aim of the event is to encourage IT professionals, marketing and design experts as well as representatives of other industries to take a chance on creating new and innovative ideas together with other enthusiasts. Cooperation with 'Startup Wise Guys' brings in the experienced and charismatic Jernej Dekleva in the role of moderator of the hackathon. He has acquired wide and valuable knowledge and experience in Denmark, organizing 'Startup Weekend' and 'Telia JUMP' hackathons and through his active involvement in the cultural life of startups. Technical support for the event is provided by the RTU Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications and the RTU Design Factory.
Previous 'Startup Slalom' hackathons have generated good ideas and successful teams. On November 1 last year, at the ‘Startup Slalom’ hackathon of financial and insurance technologies 'CardOn' – a tool providing parents with the opportunity to track the payments of their children using debit cards – took first prize. This March, a successful cooperation with 'Garage48' – an organization focused on hackathon management in Northern and Eastern Europe as well as in Africa – was established. The winner of the ‘Startup Slalom’ hackathon was the idea for the ‘BeerBnB’ sharing platform. In order to develop the business in regions of Latvia, in June the city of Ventspils hosted the IT solutions hackathon. The winner was the team 's’COOL', who came up with the idea of improving the educational process.
Everyone willing to challenge their own knowledge and innovative idea development skills in an international event is kindly invited to apply here by August 14. Participation in the hackathon is free of charge and the number of participants is limited. The best and most competitive participants will receive valuable prizes, as well as qualify for the help of top-class mentoring experts who will be involved in the project development and improvement process. The working language for the hackathon is English.
